Our visiting Icehouse artist have left after the succesful opening of their exhibition on Friday 3 July, THE VISITORS, but before leaving they spent a very rewarding afternoon with some of our young helmies!

Saturday 27 June, Anne Brodie and Yael Rosenblut led an eager group of 5 young artists on a journey of discovery, exploring and manipulating scale, composition and collage to produce some beautiful art works.

The group began by collecting specimens from the Timespan garden in transparent bags. The bags and their content were then photocopied and blown up to different degrees. The detailed results were then mixed with found images and further copies of the artists' choice.

The results of the groups activity were then framed within clock faces. Time is a theme that has run through the work Anne and Yael since they have been here, and now the group will have an artwork that will remind them of their time in timespan forever!

Explore new dimensions in printed image. Rediscover photo copy, cut out and collage. Make the micro, macro! Create miniature collages and etchings and see the unexpected images that they create when magnified and projected. This exciting workshop into the unknown is led by our two visiting artists Yael Rosenblut and Anne Brodie .

Open to all young people aged between 8 and 12 yrs old.

Bring in magazines, photographs and using Timespan’s printing services, explore scale, repetition, colour and change.

The Ice House, Helmsdale’s monumental deep freeze. Once a store for salmon catch, later a coal fired fish and chip shop. Now the vaulted chamber plays host to the second in a series of three double sited works, marking the end of two years as Timespan’s artist in residence and youth arts curator for Ruth Macdougall.

‘’Anything worth doing is probably going to take longer than you think ‘’ wrote my late friend Dave, on a note pinned to the door of his studio. Would two years be long enough?

Since August 2007 I have led nearly 300 participants in 8 communities across the region in the OURS youth arts project, facilitating their interaction with over 50 artists from the UK and abroad through trips, events, workshops and apprenticeships. Driving forward the next chapter in the life of Helmsdale’s Ice House, illuminating and establishing an environment in a building for which the possibilities are now limitless, is the permanent legacy that I leave. Yet amidst all this activity, I was all the time hoping that I would recognise my own work when I saw it…

The circus elephant in the picture below is called Bosko, the photograph was taken circa 1900 and he is one of three unlikely creatures that live in Timespan’s photographic archive; a llama, an elephant and a camel. He is approaching the two children at what would appear to be a bit of a trot – elephants cannot run. What happened next? I reckon he slaps the kid and makes a run for it.

Tuesday, and work began on the papier mache process. 5 layers if possible in alternationg colors. No folds!
The group liked the glue, which stayed warm for a little while after turing into paste/ semolina!. As the masks turned different colors, the group found that the personalities of their masks changed. Blue and Purple were the best colors for papering.
A special archival glue was used on the masks. This glue is normally used in book binding and has no acid in it, so it's kind to hands and doesn't effect the paper.

Cath helps Dawn smooth out any unruly folds.

The masks will have to dry next to the raidiators for two days before we can extract the clay and begin painting them. We next meet on Friday to do just this.

In to the workshop 10 am and straight to work on the clay models of our masks.
Audrey, Dawn, Connie, Jodie and Joel have some great ideas and managed to produce some beautiful models, inspired by Cath's fantastic Golden wolf and other masks.
The group got on so well that they even had time to cover their models in cling film, ready to begin the papier mache process tomorrow. Cath says it will take two hours per papier mache layer and we need at least three layers, so they better not be late!!!

The Ice House, Helmsdale’s monumental deep freeze. Once a store for salmon catch, later a coal fired fish and chip shop. Now the vaulted chamber plays host to a series of three double sited exhibitions, marking the end of two years as Timespan’s artist in residence and youth arts curator for Ruth Macdougall. The first Ice House artist, Chris Dooks, is commissioned and curated by Timespan’s youth arts group, OURS, led by Ruth.

‘’A linguistic survey sound recording from 1964 featured Helmsdale fisherman Neil MacKay and wife Mary (née Sutherland). A story is told and in the background, bells chime. A knitting group helped me track down the next of kin who had never heard the recording. Using the acoustics in Helmsdale’s ice house, I shaped music from these recordings, adding fresh elements to create a mini-album of “folktronica” with accompanying photographic cover-art. The project became a “netlabel" (www.studio1824.com), a live electronic concert, community workshops and a gallery exhibition featuring an enormous salmon of knowledge, patrolling the ice house and nearby Gartymore…’’

Cath Whippey is a fine artist, specialising in the culture of mask making. Her work varies from intimate head pieces to enormous full bodied works, exploring a host of materials.

With Cath you will have the opportunity to learn the process of making a mask that that you can wear. Using a process of clay modeling, papier mache and finally painting the masks.

Each day will be a different stage.
Day one: clay modelingDay two: papier mache over the clay form
Day three: removing from clay, tidying up edges, cutting eyeholes, painting the mask, and wearing!

Brief: Think of an animal/human hybrid character - perhaps an animal with some human emotions e.g. - surprise, envy, in love, tranquility, mirth or a human with some animal emotions e.g. scurrying about, sniffing things out - Through the clay modeling process, you will discover the features of your mask. It's about finding a characteristic, a temperament and mood for the character you model.

Collect images of human facial expressions - the more expressive the better, maybe search for images of character actors faces - and collect images of animal faces, as many images as possible, you can bring in photocopies from books, maybe even sketches. Look in the mirror and try different expressions, see how 'pulling a face' makes you feel in your body and posture.

Participants will use the spoken word, field recordings and found sounds to generate a pallette of sounds. Then this ''pallette'' will form the basis of an abstract musical soundscape using soundtoy. The two sessions will culminate ina few five minute performances at the end of workshop 2. We will also be listening to some examples of electronic music from the 1960s to the present day.

Auhtor Eleanor Thom will be leading creative writing workshops on Tuesday 10, 17 and 24 February, 7-9pm in Timespan. This workshop is open to adults and young people aged 12+

Write with your eyes, your mouth, your nose. Write with your ears, particularly with your ears. Give your character a black eye, give ‘em a texas twang, make their skin soft as mashed potato. Lock the whole gang in the ice house. Enter them in a singing competition. Pen punchy prose, or if you’re more composed, cook up a lyrical sentence that melts in the mouth. This series of workshops in creative writing will be full of tips and techniques.

Tomorrow night - Saturday 17 January, 7pm in Timespan - the duo will be holding an end of research week event, during which they will present and discuss the material and research that they have gathered aswell as revealing the master plan for the commission.

The presentation should last roughly 30 mins with time for open disuccion at the end.

Hello one and all,

For the past two months, Timespan’s youth arts group OURS have been working on a curatorial project, which has presented them with the exciting challenge of commissioning an artist to exhibit in Timespan’s gallery next year.

The group designed a double sited commission, inviting Scotland based artist to propose a body of work in response to Helmsdale’s 19 Century Ice House. The work would be exhibited/performed/installed in the Ice House along with a simultaneous exhibition of work in the gallery of documentation and /or related work.

The project was advertised in all the major art forums and the response we received was fantastic. Over 200 artists requested the application pack and 52 artists finally applied for the opportunity. The group had the long and challenging task of short listing a handful of artists for telephone interview with lead artist Ruth Macdougall, and after a lot of consideration the group have finally commissioned the following artist:

Chris’ bio
‘’Trained as both photographer and film-maker, in my twenties I was directing arts-based TV documentaries such as ITV's The South Bank Show. Since then I’ve morphed and evolved to become a conceptual artist in my own right. Multimedia, sound art, music, song writing and fiction all feature equally in my practice. The Sunday Herald bestowed upon me the title of ‘polymath’. I thought that sounded a bit too mathematical, so coined ‘polymash’ to infer something softer, and dare I say it, fun!

I am a highly adaptable cultural practitioner, and more than anything else I enjoy residencies. Whether the end result is a film, an installation, a collection of songs, a podcast, or a piece of creative writing, I feel at my most useful collecting oral history, songs, and visual culture, and working with diverse communities to form elements of any given residency. I’ve made around 45 projects over the last twelve years, in Scotland, England, Holland, and the USA, and have released five full length electronic music albums on various labels. Most recently, The Aesthetic Animals Album, a collection of new songs and laptop-folk, was released on Benbecula Records (benbecula.com) I also currently present a net-radio show on unusual music. I make single screen works for video as well as build installations in galleries, do site specific work, and also design psychogeographic tours. My tours aim to tweak an audience’s perception of an environment, in this case without the need to physically create a piece of art. A good example is The Polyfaith Tour of Edinburgh (polyfaith.com).’’ Chris Dooks

Ice House proposal

The phrase “I use echo” is an anagram of Ice House.
Using techniques from my psychogeographic tOURS, which flirt with the truth, we will ironically be encouraging a sense of enquiry and genuine historical research in the community. The OURS group will work with me on looking at what parts of the building could reveal stories which will be peppered with a mixture of real facts and fiction. The tour will turn the Ice house into art/historical object and the OURS group and myself will, through the use of temporary light and sound and/or the internet, develop a tour which makes folk feel connected to the building by their creative participation of new narratives in it.

Both www.polyfaith.com and www.advocatesclose.co.uk are good examples of how I turn the everyday into more significant events. They are slightly underpinned by Buddhist philosophies that the real stuff, the juice, is always in front of you, it’s a matter of changing lenses. This is a proposal I am quite passionate about but it’s difficult to articulate without demonstrating it in action. The websites will help, but I would jump at the chance to show you some of these techniques.’’ Chris Dooks

Chris will work on this project with his partner and author, Eleanor Thom whose ancestors were in fact Sutherland Travellers. Chris and Eleanor will be resident in Timespans’ artist flat between 12 and 18 January undertaking their research week, during which time they will witness the opening of the river, take in Lorna Jappy’s fantastic story tour of the village and hold their own events to meet local people and encourage the vital dialogue that will make this project truly unique.

We hope that the people of Helmsdale will make the most of having these exciting artists in their midst, helping them to create a fantastic work that will celebrate the ice house and the surrounding area.

"I've filmed Killer Whales in St Kilda, made a Gaelic film in Harris and recreated the Wicker Man Movie in rural Aberdeenshire, but I've never worked in and around an Ice House in what I would call The Proper North East of Scotland! which is nice, because I originally hail from The Proper Northeast of England! Iron Stars Installation - 6 December 2008

With the help of Edward MacKay and Gary Macmillan from the Helmsdale community council, the group installed their iron and copper star sculpture in the Helmsdale light garden.
The stars were hung from the copper wire so that they could move in the wind and as the metals came together, the stars began to sing!

This iron structure was made by John Duncan from Brora, he makes some beautiful winter decorations and put this aluminium frame together for us. Podi and Joe then wove the copper wore between the two sides from which the stars hung.

Christmas Project 2008 - Iron Stars Workshop 29-30 November

Over a two day workshops the OURS group designed their own unique stars , which were then created using galvanized iron and recycled copper wire.

The workshops was led by metal craftsman, Arthur Dutch from Clashmore.
The group came up with some fantastic designs, which can now be seen on display in Helmsdale’s winter lights garden.

On Saturday 4 October, a group of creative young people met in Borgie forest for a fascinating day of activities in the forest’s monumental log cabins. The group were met by roaring log fires and a wealth of talented activity leaders:
Henry Fosbrooke – Woodland Crafts and Arts
Arthur Dent – Tin smith
Elliot Rudie –historian/artist
After an engrossing introduction from Elliot Rudie on the environmentally friendly methods of house building that our ancestors employed, we were then given demonstrations by Henry and Arthur.
Inspired by Henry and Arthur’s use of material and green approach to craft, we set about collecting materials from the surrounding area. As you will see from the pictures below, the group had a fantastic time, turning wood, beating baked bean cans into symbols and constructing an enormous xylophone, which now lives in Joe’s back garden!
A great time was had by all!

Sorry people we're not allowed to make it crude like the real little Britian, so child friendly ideas please. Try to think of something mundane, normal, and then take the mickey out of it!

Day 3 in Lairg and we have some natural sculptures to make. first, we went out into ferrycroft woods, split up into 2 groups and made the tallest possible sculpture.

This was our second day at Lairg and we did the video project. Charlie brought in a bulls tusk/horn that we just had to use as a prop. During the brainstorming thy came up with the story of the Ryanocerious's horn. A poor crofter finds a horn which brings him good luck and.... come to the exhibition if you want to find out more! charlie and Karen were our camera(wo?)men

On our first day everyone had a good time(apart from lee, who left halfway during the first day) doing the derive apart from poor gillian who fell and badly hurt her knee:-(. The route took is through ferrycroft woods and then over the heather. We had a good look at some of the wildlife becausewe saw a dragonfly and a lizard. We ended up well away from the line and we didn't go through anybody's house(they wouldn't have let us anyway because some of us were soaking wet)!!!

The group made a film about a traveling salesman called forty pockets.A fisherman tells Fortey pockets that he is going to search for gold with his map.Forty Pockets wants to come but the fisherman says no.When the fisherman isn't looking he steals the map and with companions sets out to find the gold.Ancestors of the owner of the gold make him complete three quests to be worthy of the gold. Does Forty pockets get the gold? (you can find out at the exhibition :D)

Activity: Making a short film.

The story decided on was one in which the 11th Duke of Westminster was planning to cut down Achfary forest to make way for a large industrial estate. A tree hugger warns him not to but he doesn't listen. He has the trees cut down so the tree spirits take revenge.

Everyone is welcome to come and sit in on this meeting. We will be discussing past, present and future projects, their successes, room for improvement and what we aim to do over the next year. Please inform the youth representatives of any suggestions or ideas that you have, we are particularly keen to hear ideas on how we can open up the programme to more young people. This is your chance to have your views heard and to be involved in the groups projects right from the beginning!

Test 1.
10 minute task
Each group has ten minutes to build the tallest , safest structure that they can, from found , natural objects on the beach.

Test 2.
20 minute task.
Heather's group must create a triangle made entirely from seaweed.
Sean's group must create a circle made entirely from blue rope.
The triangle and circle must be large enough so that we can see them clearly from the top of the nearby hill!

Test 3.
30 minute task.
Each group must nominate one person to have their protrait made entirely from stone, sea weed and wood from the beach.

Test 4.
1 hour task
Each person must lie down on Ruth's very long role of paper and help each other as they draw round the outline of their bodies. This sketch will help them as they design their own fully body portraits from found materials on the beach.

KINLOCHBERVIE...IN THE WORKS...Day 1

The KLB team! Over the next three days, this is our extended Spanner family.

First of all , we all spent an amusing morning getting to know one another, learning about the Spanner projects and donning the all important Spanner...in the works...t-shirts!
This a map of KLB in 1878 and another from 2008, the group figured out what used to be in place of the current houses and took us on a tour of all the most important sites in KLB. We did a lot of walking today!

Task 1.
Derive = draw a circle at random on the 2008 map of Kinlochbervie. In two groups , you must navigate your way round the line of the circle, never leaving the exact route of the circle, no matter what!
One group will go clockwise round the circle, the other will go anti clockwise. Each group must document their journey using drawings, photography, video and collecting found objects along the way. This task will challenge your map reading skills, team work and powers of negociation...the line aint always easy...espacially when it goes through someone's garden!

Hi, I've just had the chnce to update the blog with my t-shirt design, and well here it is.

I made it by mixing roughly 10 pictures together and playing about with opacity, hue and saturation and inverting. Then i cut up the finished picture and rearranged it. The workshop was really fun and would be good to do again. Ben still has to get his picture uploaded and as usual he'll probably forget(like i did!!)

Wednesday 4 June: Alison Bell's first digital textile workshop with the Spanners.
The group were each given a digital camera and asked to take shots around the Timespan garden, the pictures were then mixed with on line images and digitally manipulated into the designs below. Once finished, the designs were then printed on special transfer paper and ironed onto the bags...easy! and they all look great!!!!!

North Coast OURS trip 24-25 May

Earth Ship
Our first port of call was at Skerray's Earth Ship. This home is being built almost exclusively from reclycled materials by Rhona and Steven Graham. Found mostly in the desserts of North America, building an earth ship is a hugely demanding and ambitious project, particularly in our wet Scottish climate. The main structure of the house is built from reclaimed car tyres that are then packed with earth until they inflate. As you can see, the weather was great! Here are some photos of us hard at work on the earth ship, packing tyres. Steven first demonstrated the process to us, selecting the right size of tyre, making sue they are level, lining the botom with cardboard , then finally packing the tyre with subsoil until the top inflates. This is very hard work! usually it takes a day for one person to pack a tyre but with the power of the OURS team, we managed to pack two in just over an hour! - this was a great project to see and take part in, and we hope to visit again in the future...Thanks Rhona and Steven for having us!

Lotte Glob's studio and Sculpture Garden
After leaving the Eart Ship, we headed along the North Coast to lotte Glob's home. Lotte is a Dutch ceramicist who has lived most of her life in the Highlands of Scotland, her work is directly influenced by her surroundings and she has transformed her croft into an evolving scupture garden. We were shown aroung the studio and garden by Lotte's assistant Martina who is herself an accomplished ceramicist with a shop in Balnakeil Crafts Village.
As we walked around the croft discovering the many hidden wors of art that seem to grow out of nowhere, we felt as if we were being watched...the ceramic creatures that popualte the croft have eyes!

Durness
We arrived in Durness at around 2.30pm, settled in and visited the Balnakeil Crafts village. There, we saw Martina's work, bought lots of lovely chocolate from Coco Mountain Chocolate factory and visted the studios of several other artists.
Later we met up with 7 young people who attend the Durness Youth Group. We delivered the presentation to them on our projects that we had been practicing in our last workshop. The presentation was a good experience, which went very well and so we all headed off to Sango Sands Oasis for a much deserved dinner.

The two groups got along well and we went down to Sango beach for a game of sand pictionary - basically pictionary but instead of drawing on paper, the two group were put into mixed teams and asked to draw or sculpt their words in the sand. The first group to get ten words correct - won!

Sand pictionary is a little harder than the normal kind.

Smoo Cave

Donned with helmets and sitting aboard a rubber dingy, we were led by Colin Coventry into the inner chabers of Smoo cave, the largest sea cave in Scotland. The inner caves are full of natural water where a unique breed of trout swim! Colin, clearly an expert in geology and caving, described in facinating detail how the caves came to be formed and the still evolving theories that surround them.

The final stop on our trip was Northlands Creative Glass in Lybster.
The three international artists in residence who spoke at Timespan on 19 May, were shwoing their beautiful work and leading an open workshop, which allowed workshops participants to make their own glass fish. It is a long process so we were not able to take our fish and other creatures home the same day. When we eventually collect them, we will be sure to post some pics, can't wait!

Saturday 24 may

Today we went to help pack tyres at an earth ship, the method of building an eco friendly house using recyclable materials like tyres was really interesting and the dedication of the people building it was inspirational.

After spending an hour there we travelled to see Lotte Glob’s sculpture garden and studio, we were shown around by Martina, Lotte Globs assistant. Her work was really unusual and amusing, she had made lots of little alienish animals along with some more serious work which was very beautiful and unique. Her sculpture garden was lovely to walk around so we decided to have our lunch there.

After lunch we travelled to Durness where we were staying the night and got settled in at the lazy crofters bunkhouse. It was a very nice bunk house with a deck outside and a nice big kitchen. We walked along to the crafts village and went to some of the shops. We first went to Martina’s shop were she sold her artwork, I bought a ceramic dragon or dinosaur (it’s really cute!).

We then went to the chocolate shop called cocoa mountain and got a chocolate each I had a whisky truffle it was luuuuuuuurvely. We also went to the book shop, which was boring hahaha books are no fun but other people bought some (some books are fun though).We walked back to the bunk house and spent like 10 minuets getting ready to go and meet the Durness youth group.

The Durness youth group were all very nice and we went out for dinner at the Sango sands oasis restaurant after our presentation. The restaurant was quite nice but I wasn’t very hungry because I had had a big lunch so I got farmhouse pate, onion rings and orange juice. The onion rings were nice but the pate was not….it was lumpy (I hate lumpy pate….the lady said it wouldn’t be lumpy ). I also had strawberry ice-cream, it was good but I didn’t eat it all, Alison ate a bit though. After dinner we went to Sango sans beach and played sand pictionary (drawing in the sand) and hide and seek . We then walked to the other beach, which I cant’ remember the name of and watched the sun set, it was beautiful. I took lots of pictures of it and rolled down the sand dunes(fun!).

By the time I we got back to the bunk house I was sooooooo tired , we had tea and Orios ( Orios are so goooood) then I went for a shower and went to bed.

I had a great time this day, the best part was ……everything, everything was great I can’t pick a favourite…don’t make me pick lol. The most surprising thing was how good hard work is for your mood, I was in a really good mood after packing tyres….
The most challenging thing was lifting a sledge hammer, I gave up and used a little one instead. What I learnt today was how to pack a tyre full of dirt, which is a handy skill to have (if your planning to build an earth ship!) lol.

Sunday 25 may

Today we woke up to yummy pancakes courtesy of Sean and Alison the master bakers of our group !!. Once full with breakfast, we drove back down to the pretty sunset beach and had a sandcastle building competition, Ruth and Jenny won with there volcano castle…..hmmmm lol. Then we went to Smoo cave to go on the boat tour into the cave. It was amazing inside. The tour guide told us all about how the cave was formed and about the ages of rocks and stuff. It was a bit scary going in the boat but a great experience. Lastly we travelled to Lybster, getting lunch at along the way. At Lybster we went to a glass model making workshop. You were supposed to make a glass fish but I made a glass heart :D. They wont be ready until a few more days . I cant wait to see the outcome .
The most surprising thing about today was that cows go on the beach in the mornings….the baby ones were cute (not so much the big ones…).The best part of today was Smoo cave it was a great experience and so amazing, I also really like the fish that lived in the cave, they were cute. The most challenging thing was making a square sandcastle ( without a bucket), I had never attempted this before but I think I did quite good for my first time. What I learnt today was how Smoo cave was formed, although I cant really remember the details I have an idea sort of..

During the coarse of the summer holiays we are going to be leading art workshops in Five lucky remote communities With the help of our faithfull old Ruth MacDougul(I hope I spelled her name right or she'll kill me !!;)
We will stay in each communitie for three days and we will do "icebreaker games", a derieve , video photography and more! We will also help them set up their own blog site to record the events that take place.
Eventually we want to have an exhibition of our work at timespan and would like to invite the communities that we visited back to timespan to so that they can see each other's work!!!
It's going to be an exciting summer holiday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

North Coast Trip 24-25 May 2008

On the 24th of May, members of the Spanners will be heading North, first to visit and take part in building an Earth Ship! watch this space...
Following this, the group will head along the North coast to visit the studio and sculpture garden of internationally renowned ceramicist, Lotte Glob.

The rest of the day will be spent visiting Balnakeil crafts village and the beach.

In the evening , the group will meet up with the Durness youth group, have dinner together and weather permitting, take part in arts related activities on ther beach.

Nicole - I decided to go on the Orkney trip during the Easter holidays as I thought it would be fun and a good experience for me. Also, my two best friends were also going, which meant we were all enjoying the art museums, chapels and many more fun things together.
I expected the trip to be all about art and museums but when I got there, it was nothing like that. Already I had experienced things I had never done before when I was only there for three days for example: the ferry, the dark caves that had lots of history behind them, Skara Brae and many more things. So the trip was very different to what I expected.
Yes, I would say the trip met my expectations because I had lots of things to do, I also learnt a lot and I had so much to talk about when I came home.
My favourite aspect of the trip was the ferry and the tomb, Maeshowe, as I was so scared to enter them. But when I got inside it wasn’t bad at all, it was actually really good!
The only thing that could have been improved was getting up later in the morning but that wasn’t possible, so nothing, everything was good!

Sean - My favourite part of this trip was the visit to St Magnus Cathedral. The architecture, windows, everything is spectacular. We had activities arranged after our trips around the island, such as the film night, model making competitions and ‘Circle Time’’
Our team leaders : Jenny, Lindsay and Ruth were great. Ruth must be really devoted to us to organise this trip.

Natalie - I decided to go to Orkney because I’ve never been before and I thought it would be a good experience and opportunity.
I expected we would just be visiting lots of places. The trip definitely surpassed my expectations and was a lot more interesting than I thought it was going to be.
My favourite part of the trip was visiting the small island of Hoy. Three members of the Pier Group came with us, Graham, Holly and Rory. We went over on the foot ferry, then drove to Hoy 'outdoor centre', where there was a Triangle International Artists workshop going on. I wasn’t really looking forward to this as I didn’t really know what it was but it turned out to be my favourite part of the whole trip!
When we got inside, we had an introduction from one of the artists, Amy, who was quite local. She explained that the workshop was 20 artists from all over the world, living together for two weeks, learning new talents from each other and creating art.
Then she took us to meet some of the other artists. We met artists from Germany, Cuba, Afghanistan, Trinidad, Korea, and Orkney. They were all very nice and showed us some of their work. There was also a Kirk where some of the artists were working and we were shown around it. Then we walked down to the beach with an old boat house, where one of the artists was making a musical instrument out of an old piece of wood. Next we went to Rackwick beach, one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen!!
We drew pictures in our spanner planners, took photos and drew in the sand.

Ben - I decided to go on the trip to Orkney because I wanted to visit Orkney and to get to know the group better.

I expected the trip to be great fun and educational and it was! I learnt a lot about the history of Orkney as well as some arty things.
My favourite aspect of the trip was going to visit all the different places and working as a team.

My favourite activity on the island was working with the Muddy Funksters because we made things out of old bits and pieces and it was really fun.

I also liked going to see all those artists from around the world, making things out of what they had discovered all about them.

The thing that I will take from this trip is happy memories and a good time.

It is hard to pick a favourite experience from the trip so I am going to outline one which I found most inspiring to me. When we visited the artists on Hoy I was very interested in the art work that one of the artists showed us in her portfolio and also the work done by (the guy on the computer). I also found the topic raised by (the artist with the sticky notes) , about using materials surrounding you to create art. She mentioned this because of the difficulties in attaining materials from the mainland. I have always thought that art made from natural materials is more interesting and unique, the artists working on Hoy made the most of materials from the beach which made their art more personal and in connection with were it was made.
Other highlights include avocado salad, pictionary, and animal balloons :D
This trip was also good because I took lots of pictures, which was helpful to me as I rarely have a chance to photograph such beautiful views as those in Orkney, I hope to develop my photography skills in doing a course on it at school.

When I first wanted to go on the trip I have to say I was expecting it to be all visiting places but as I soon learnt it was centered mainly around meeting new people and interacting with them. I enjoyed the whole trip ( and yes that does include those comfy couches on the ferry) but, if I had to pick one thing it would have to be the Pier Arts Centre because it was a great art gallery, even the little bits that weren't really meant to be art were in a away. The volcano wall (I think it was called) was a permanent piece which was I admit a little strange but it caught the attention of the passerby and that was the main point I think.

What I took away from this trip? Hmm..well it would have to be a new found appreciation for artists and their work. I mean don't get me wrong, I thought art was worth its price. But now I feel that a lot more goes into art than I would have expected, for example the artists on Hoy, they were working only with what they could get but they still found ways and means of making their ideas work.

The group we had was good, the place we stayed were good, the places we went were good, and that's what made the trip great!

Spanners Orkney Visit 2008

Ten members of the Spanners arts group, will visit Orkney with Ruth, Linsday and Jenny.
During the visit we will work with the Muddy Funksters, visit the Pier Arts Centre, The Italian Cheapel, Skara Brae, Meashowe, The Ring of Brodgar and Rackwick beach on Hoy. Whilst on Hoy we will be joined by members of the Pier Group and visit the 20 international artists who are taking part in the two week Triangle Arts workshop. We will create work indoors or outdoors, weather permitting, in response to our surroundings using: the natural and found materials around us, video and stills photos.

Look out for pictures of the trip on our return!

Orkney visit

Hi, the advance party from Orkney has returned. I havn't been to all of the places that we will visit but the few that I have seen were brilliant. Saint Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall is really big , the walls are lined with headstones(mostley written in Latin) and the stained glass windows are competing with them.
The Italian chapel doesn't look much from the outside but it is pretty good because the main painting was done from a postcard.
Skara Brae, I don't need to say anything about theat although you aren't actuallly allowed to walk through the houses themselves(in the interests of preserving the 5, 000 year old village) They have a really good replica housefor you to go in and look at.
There are many more and I'll leave you to see them fot yourselves. (you'll want to look scapa flow if we pass it!)

The pages have been ordered and the nuts tightened - finally the Spanner Planners are finished.
An extra workshop with Ruth will be planned for those who were unable to attend the binding workshop.

The books look great and quite industrial due to the vast number of pages!!!!
The beauty of these books is that they can expand and grow with you, and as you all have extensions for your nuts and bolts binding, the sky is the limit as far as binding in new elements.

New Project!!!!!!!!
Project intro and aims:
A month long project to design and produce bespoke books/sketch books that will bear witness to the aspirations of Timespan’s youth arts group at the beginning of their two year project together. The books will enable the group to develop their goals and present an informative document for reflection and evaluation. It is proposed that the books will be expanding works in progress, encouraging sketch book skills to be developed and inspire pride in their young owners. It is anticipated that the book will not only compliment but also contrast their collective, on line sketch book, www.spanners-in-the-works.blogspot.com.
This project is led by artist in residence Ruth Macdougall and graphic deigner Al MacInnes.

We have just been out puting some of the vinyl work up on the windows.
it was FREEZING !
but anyway come along tomorrow to have some christmas fun games.
And some mulled wine.
and to have a look at all of our art work on the shop windows in helmsdale !
oh and we have a special game to see who finds the Real GOLDEN spanner who ever finds it first will win a very good prize.
Remember its a real one not the sticker one on the window.
